Carol’s Story: A Message of Hope

A Chance to Thrive in time  for #ME_Awareness_Week 2021

When I left nursing in 2008 to pursue a career in Massage Therapy, I never dreamed I would be where I am today, but over the years, a dream of the future of health and wellness, of “Thrival” as opposed to the mere absence of symptoms began to form.  My professional career has led me to study different forms of soft tissue and bodywork therapy, and not all with a conscious directional plan of my own, however seemingly divinely orchestrated. The best example of this was my introduction into the world of Fascial Release back in 2014. I enrolled onto a course with nothing but curiosity as I had absolutely no idea at all about this therapy that has now become my most used technique to date. It was literally a case of “Myofascial Release Technique (MRT)? What on earth is that? I’ll train and find out!”.

The reason MRT has become my favourite specialism is that its ability to facilitate healing is unlike any other form of soft tissue or bodywork that I have come across. It has such an intrinsic and deep ability to truly heal the whole mindbody of an individual. As I learnt more and more, so more and more clients came my way who needed this mindbody healing of what they assumed was just a physical symptom.

In 2018, I experienced a severe exacerbation of some long-standing health issues of ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), Fibromyalgia and CPTSI (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Injury, or Disorder). My recovery journey necessitated some deep soul searching about what I wanted in my life, as well as reflecting and healing from my past. I dreamt of The Greenwood Centre, as Patricia describes, a place where clients can re-connect with them selves and the world with the therapeutic support of specially trained therapists, nature, self-care and community. The dream gave me a ray of hope in a very dark time, and now, having the serendipity of working with Patricia and sharing our dream, we are embarking on an accessible route to facilitate healing and recovery for the many sufferers of chronic exhaustive conditions, including PCAS/Long Covid, CFS/ME, Fibromyalgia, Post Viral Fatigue, Anxiety, Exhaustion and more.

It seems that fate has again intervened by putting on hold our original plan to have a physical centre with the life restrictions brought about by the covid pandemic, forcing us to think outside the box, enabling us to create a safe and supportive space to facilitate recovery and discovery of a better life for more individuals than we would have been able to reach in one geographical location, through the power of technology and collaboration.

We are now a core or 4 practitioners, and we have a growing number of other professionals and specialists in other fields of CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine), so that we are able to put each individual client in contact with the exact therapeutic approach that they need, when they need it.

The creation of the Greenwood Holistic Health Group and our website Fatigue-Free.Me has been a steep learning curve for us; working out how best to deliver the incredibly specialist knowledge we have in order as a team to facilitate healing and recovery in the truest sense to as many people who so desperately need a unified and supported program of health.  We continue to learn, and will always be learning from our clients, who are instrumental and pivotal in directing the care we provide. We know that recovery is possible; we are amongst many individuals who have recovered from years of pain and immobility ourselves and gone on to run marathons and successful businesses, climb mountains and create a magical life, even win Olympic gold medals[1]!

So our first mission is to share hope, hope that is greatly missing from the present narrative around ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia and the like. Recovery, enjoying a full and rich life, being not just independent, but also dependable again, is a real option, all you need is the right specialist support and the willingness to do your best to return to the world in your truest, most vital self, and THRIVE!
